• Help Sri Lanka: Small Projects, Immediate Impact

Welcome to ABDF.org! — ABDF.org was formed by Bennett Hinkley, with the help of several friends and colleagues, after he visited the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and saw first-hand the devastation caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that caused such large-scale tragedy across most of the Asian coastline.

    Students at Vantharumoolai school.

ABDF.org is dedicated to raising funds to donate to small-scale projects that are needed by the people of this region of Sri Lanka. Our projects have a maximum total of $1,500USD, which means that donations can quickly match the need of each project and create immediate benefits for the people of Batticaloa.

Please donate generously and tell your friends, neighbors, family and colleagues about ABDF.org. Learn more throughout this website or contact us.

Wow, so it’s been a week since I last wrote.  In part, I’ve been very busy, and feeling too lazy to write in the evenings.  Also, the computer on which I send my emails here at the SFS office has become quite buggy, and among other things, shuts down and restarts every few minutes.  I’ve been hoping that it’ll get fixed quickly, but with the other main distraction, the Tamil New Year, I had hoped in vain.  But enough of the kvetch; I’m writing now.

Hi everybody!

First, I want to tell you I met a lovely British woman named Susan last Friday.  She’s a friend of Kala’s, and like me can’t help but return to Batti.  She’s been in Sri Lanka six months, and will be returning to the UK next week.  Her husband, Jerry is also a fan (addict?) but he was not able to come with Susan this time around.  He will be in SL this summer, and hopefully I’ll get meet him.  The two of them work on several projects in the area as well as in Galle (in the south), mostly in education.  Susan has volunteer taught at St. Cecilia’s, the site of our English Lab project.  It was fun meeting her, and I think I can count her as a friend.

Hi everybody!

I had a good day today.  I also saw an old friend from the tsunami days.  His name is Kukasan.  Some of you may remember the story from last year; I had no way of contacting him the entire time I was here, but as I was getting onto the train to return to Colombo to come home, I heard him shouting my name.  So we did have a reunion, albeit for five minutes.  Since then he had broken his phone and has new one, so again I couldn’t get hold of him.  But a friend of Kukasans’ recognized me as I drove by a couple of days ago and told him that I’m back.  So this morning he paid a visit, and we exchanged phone numbers.  His English has improved hugely since the tsunami days and he has matured from an awkward teenager wanting to practice English to a grown man ready to start University.
