• Help Sri Lanka: Small Projects, Immediate Impact

Welcome to ABDF.org! — ABDF.org was formed by Bennett Hinkley, with the help of several friends and colleagues, after he visited the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and saw first-hand the devastation caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that caused such large-scale tragedy across most of the Asian coastline.

    Students at Vantharumoolai school.

ABDF.org is dedicated to raising funds to donate to small-scale projects that are needed by the people of this region of Sri Lanka. Our projects have a maximum total of $1,500USD, which means that donations can quickly match the need of each project and create immediate benefits for the people of Batticaloa.

Please donate generously and tell your friends, neighbors, family and colleagues about ABDF.org. Learn more throughout this website or contact us.

Manuela Nayantara, future author.

Hi everyone!

Meet Manuela Nayantara. She’s 13 years old, and a 9th grade student at St. Cecilia’s Girls School.

Although she doesn’t have any brothers or sisters, she has three best friends at St. Cecilia’s, from whom she’s inseparable. Which makes the fact that they are in the same class all the better. Right now, Manuela is taking math, English, social studies, health science and as an elective, Western Music. She plays the piano, which she likes, and is learning the clarinet, for which she’s not quite as excited. She also likes to play badminton, but her real passion is reading and especially, writing.

Although run by nuns under the auspices of the Catholic Church, the school accepts students of all religious denominations, even offering religious instruction to the girls according to their personal confessions. There is no attempt made to convert the students, and the school celebrates the religious holidays of all attendant religions.

Some background, according to Bennett…

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Let me tell you a story.

When I first arrived in Batticaloa almost three years ago, it was only a few months after the tsunamis had hit. One day, after watching a van drive by sporting the flag of a well-known American aid organization (that shall remain anonymous), my friend Jesu turned to me and said, "All they are doing is cheating us!"

"How so?" I asked.

Hi everybody!

Well, you know that old maxim, that when it rains, it pours? Well that has certainly proven true over the last couple of days. Last week: bupkis. This week: a deluge! I’m not entirely sure how or where to begin, so I’ll just jump right in.

For the next bit, I’m not going to name names; given the public nature of this website and blog, you’ll understand why.

Hi everybody!

Well, I have to admit that this past week has been one of little action, as far as projects are concerned. Current projects are in place and being worked on, and little new has come up on the horizon. That’s OK, as most of the ABDFs’ current funds are now committed one way or another. Until we get in some more money, I can’t commit to anything major. Plus with projects sometimes you just have to let things ferment a little.
