• Help Sri Lanka: Small Projects, Immediate Impact

Welcome to ABDF.org! — ABDF.org was formed by Bennett Hinkley, with the help of several friends and colleagues, after he visited the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and saw first-hand the devastation caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that caused such large-scale tragedy across most of the Asian coastline.

    Students at Vantharumoolai school.

ABDF.org is dedicated to raising funds to donate to small-scale projects that are needed by the people of this region of Sri Lanka. Our projects have a maximum total of $1,500USD, which means that donations can quickly match the need of each project and create immediate benefits for the people of Batticaloa.

Please donate generously and tell your friends, neighbors, family and colleagues about ABDF.org. Learn more throughout this website or contact us.

Hi everybody!

The last week or so has been very busy. As you will recall from my last dispatch, I returned to Batti and promptly got a head cold. I’m pretty much over it now; even the residual cough, which always takes me a long time to shake off, has pretty much disappeared.

As I said, I’ve been pretty busy. For one thing, my friend Errol came to town from Canada. (I’m using the past tense because he left Batti this morning.) One of the ABDFs’ missions is to act as a conduit for others to come and run their own projects. This particular case worked extremely well, and I am proud about what we were able to accomplish.

Hi everybody!

As I write this, I am still in Colombo. I return by night train to Batticaloa Monday night. In the meantime I am having a surprisingly good, and productive, time in Colombo.

But I want to catch you up first. When I closed my last dispatch, I had driven up to Colombo from Unawatuna, the small village just outside Galle. I arrived at the Ministry Building, and was told that the next day my friends Minister Sivalingam and Shanthakumar, his personal secretary, were going to take me with them to the southern city of Ratnapura for a few days. OK…

Hi everybody!

I think it’s been almost two weeks since my last dispatch. Sorry about that, but I’ve been doing some traveling, and haven’t had a solid chunk of time in which to write. So now I have a bunch of catching up to do.

On Friday the 1st I drove with Jerry from Batticaloa to Unawatuna, a tourist resort on the south coast a couple of kilometers from the city of Galle. Galle itself is an ancient trading port, and was used by the Portuguese and Dutch as their primary depot. The British used Galle as well, but by that time Colombo was gaining in prominence. Galle Fort is the old section of town; it is enclosed by Dutch-built walls, complete with parapets and towers. Looking at it I was reminded of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride at Disneyland; at any moment I expected a pirate ship to sail up and start firing cannon.
